Rhonda MacLean, Former CISO of Boeing, Bank of America, and Barclays, Joins SecureMySocial Advisory Board

Ms. MacLean is presently the CEO of MacLean Risk Partners, a risk-management consulting company, and serves on the Board of Directors of several cybersecurity and fraud-prevention companies including RedSeal and ThreatMetrix. She previously served as Chief Information Security Officer for Boeing, Bank of America, and Barclays, PLC, Global Retail and Commercial Bank in London, and served on the Board of Directors of Vontu and PGP Corporation, leading technology companies dedicated to providing data protection and data loss solutions, both of which were acquired by Symantec. She has also served as Adjunct Distinguished Senior Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University’s Information Networking Institute.
Earlier in her career, Ms. MacLean was appointed by the United States Secretary of the Treasury to serve as the sector coordinator and chairperson of the Financial Services Sector Coordinating Council for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security. She has won many awards including having been named by Network World, on multiple occasions, as one of the most powerful 50 people in the networking field, and winning the CSO Compass Award for Industry Leadership, CIO Digest EMEA Visionary Award, and the Executive Women’s Forum’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Forbes: Are You Spending Your Information-Security Budget On The Wrong Technology?
“Which firewall should I use?” is a question that I am frequently asked when I meet businesspeople at conferences and networking events.
While it may sound innocuous, this inquiry is, in fact, indicative of a disturbing trend found among both businesspeople and consumers vis-à-vis the security of their valuable and private information: investing too much attention and money (from limited budgets) in areas in which they already benefit from relatively solid security, and, therefore, have disproportionately low returns on improvements, while all but ignoring various gaping holes.

Nearly Half Of 'Game of Thrones' Upcoming Season Leaks Online -- Was HBO Hacked?
Yesterday, one day before season five of the popular HBO show, Game of Thrones, was scheduled to premier on television, someone released copies of four upcoming episodes, making them available to the public via the Torrent system frequently used for disseminating illegal copies of videos. By early this morning, the video files had been downloaded at least 800,000 times.

ISIS Blacks Out French Television Station Broadcasts -- CyberTerrorism Has Arrived
On Wednesday night, parties claiming to belong to the Islamic State (ISIS) blacked out broadcasts on 11 channels of French television station, TV5Monde, as well as breached and defaced the network’s social media accounts.
The massive hack-attack – which took the station off the air for hours and disrupted normal operations for nearly a day – was certainly not the first assault directed by Islamic extremists at media outlets, but, the technological sophistication of this week’s broad takedown of a network does seem to represent a significant escalation of capabilities; if this action was truly carried out by ISIS, it is evidence that the group may have far more advanced cyberwar capabilities than was conventionally believed to be the case.

The White House Was Hacked -- Could It Happen Again?
On Tuesday it was reported that foreign spies likely breached sensitive computer systems in the White House and State Department. The attack is believed to have begun with a targeted phishing email; foreign agents tricked at least one American worker into taking unsafe actions that opened the door for hackers who ultimately expanded their attack into a major breach.

Forbes: Nude Photos Of Jennifer Lawrence And Kate Upton Leak: Five Important Lessons For All of Us
Several hours ago nude and risqué photos of many celebrities leaked online, the work of a hacker who, it is alleged, successfully breached Apple’s iCloud service and copied the photos. While some celebrities have disputed the authenticity of the images, Jennifer Lawrence and others have confirmed that theirs are genuine.
The current breach represents a serious crime and violation of privacy; I certainly sympathize with the victims and hope that the perpetrators of this crime are apprehended and adequately punished. Celebrities are people with feelings.
