ISIS Blacks Out French Television Station Broadcasts -- CyberTerrorism Has Arrived

On Wednesday night, parties claiming to belong to the Islamic State (ISIS) blacked out broadcasts on 11 channels of French television station, TV5Monde, as well as breached and defaced the network’s social media accounts.

The massive hack-attack – which took the station off the air for hours and disrupted normal operations for nearly a day – was certainly not the first assault directed by Islamic extremists at media outlets, but, the technological sophistication of this week’s broad takedown of a network does seem to represent a significant escalation of capabilities; if this action was truly carried out by ISIS, it is evidence that the group may have far more advanced cyberwar capabilities than was conventionally believed to be the case.

The White House Was Hacked -- Could It Happen Again?

On Tuesday it was reported that foreign spies likely breached sensitive computer systems in the White House and State Department. The attack is believed to have begun with a targeted phishing email; foreign agents tricked at least one American worker into taking unsafe actions that opened the door for hackers who ultimately expanded their attack into a major breach.

Several hours ago nude and risqué photos of many celebrities leaked online, the work of a hacker who, it is alleged, successfully breached Apple’s iCloud service and copied the photos. While some celebrities have disputed the authenticity of the images, Jennifer Lawrence and others have confirmed that theirs are genuine.

The current breach represents a serious crime and violation of privacy; I certainly sympathize with the victims and hope that the perpetrators of this crime are apprehended and adequately punished. Celebrities are people with feelings.
